When a heat wave hits Quahog, Peter gets Brian to enter a dog show to win $500 so that the family can get a new air conditioner. When they argue over a trick gone bad, Brian walks out on the family and Peter replaces him with a cat. Brian struggles to assert his civil rights and soon ends up at the pound. Chris loses interest in being a youth scout, as he would rather pursue drawing and art instead. When the Scoutmaster kicks Chris out of the troop, Peter takes the family to New York to try to get him reinstated, but he takes a wrong turn on the way and the family ends up at a Native American casino. Brian gets a job writing for a teen magazine. After trailing Meg around for research, he discovers that she has a secret boyfriend who’s in jail. When Brian attempts to inform the family of Meg’s secret life, it is revealed that her boyfriend has broken out of jail, and has been hiding in the Griffin’s house.
